Designing Worlds DW290 - Seanchai Library
It's several years since we visited the Seanchai Library – back in 2010 it was in the West of Ireland region. Now it's alongside the Community Virtual Library in the grounds of Bradley University's virtual campus in Second Life.
A "Seanchai" (pronounced "Shanna-khee") is a traditional Irish storyteller, and the Seanchai Library exists to tell stories, orally, before a live audience in the traditional way. While the Library originally had (and retains) Celtic roots, they branched out some time ago and include a vast corpus of works that are presented live on a regular basis, including such authors as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Charles Dickens – the latter whose work they celebrate every Christmas with The Dickens Project.
We talk to Caledonia Skytower, Seanchai Library Lead, and regular Library reader Corwyn Allen. Caledonia shows us around the various locations the Library has created for storytelling – including a very impressive main building – and both treat us to stories from their extensive repertoire.
